A trip to the south - New Zealand, North Island, part 2
Auckland is a nice city, but there is not a lot to do there... The main attraction is the sky tower, the highest in the south hemisphere. The view from the top (200 meters in the last floor) is great, especially on the bay of Auckland. Once back on the ground, I left the city to the south. The next destination was Waitomo Caves. And there were... caves ! But not classical caves (well, I don't think so, but I am not a great cave expert), because there, as in other caves in NZ, there are some special inhabitants in the darkness. Glow-worms are living there, and illuminate the ceilings of the caves in such a way that you feel like under a night sky full of stars. Not all caves have glow-worms though, and some are more of geological interest with lots of stalagmites and -tites, and other limestone formations. After all this time in the darkness, I left to the center of the island, to one of the most geothermically active region in the world. The main city is called Rotorua, and as soon as you arrive there, the sulphur smell fill your nose. There are many sites offering views on hot lakes, mud pools, sulphur caves or craters. I visited some of them, and finished the day in a spa in front of the Rotorua lake, in sulphur smelling waters around 40 degrees (almost too hot). I was very relaxed then and had no problem to fall asleep...
